LODI – (Thurs. 8/4/11) Stockton native Mark Helms was sworn in as Lodi’s new police chief this afternoon in the city council’s chambers packed with family, friends, well-wishers and members of sheriffs’ and police departments from various parts of California.
Prior to the swearing-in ceremony Lodi Mayor Bob Johnson made some opening remarks followed by comments from Lodi City Manager Konradt Bartlam. Helms said he wanted his family to be involved in the ceremony, so his son Adam Helms did the badge pinning, while his other two sons Andrew DeFabio and Alec Helms performed the pinning of the collar brass.
City Clerk Randi Johl then performed the swearing-in of Helms. Helms then addressed the large audience thanking them for their support. Representatives from the sheriffs’ departments of Kern, Santa Cruz and San Joaquin counties as well as from the Stockton Police Department could be seen in the audience.

It took a few anxious moments for Mark Helms' sons Alexander (left) and Andrew to pin the collar brass onto their father's tight shirt collar while their mother Debbie looks on.
City Manager Bartlam was responsible for hiring Helms. When asked by TLSN why Helms was selected as the new police chief, Bartlam replied, “Helms has a complete set of experiences. While with the Stockton Police Department he had the opportunity to command all the branches from patrol, traffic, and detectives to gangs.
“He has a master’s degree in Organizational Management from Stanislaus State and is a graduate of the FBI Academy,” continued Bartlam. “He is well-spoken, has a calm demeanor, is approachable and relates to the community,” Bartlam added.
Helms joins the Lodi Police Department after serving as captain for the Stockton Police Department.
